It’s time for Iceland to pay a price for its illegal whale hunt.

Dear Jenni,

It’s time for Iceland to pay a price for its illegal whale hunt. Stop Iceland’s Illegal Whaling

Iceland has just resumed illegal whaling -- and could kill up to 184 endangered fin whales this season alone. Please make an urgent donation to help NRDC win economic sanctions and stop the slaughter of whales for profit!

Icelandic whalers have killed and butchered 15 fin whales in the last month. Tragically, they will not be the last.

After a two-year hiatus, that nation has resumed its illegal whale hunt and announced plans to kill up to 184 fin whales this season alone.

Please make an emergency donation so that NRDC can fight for urgently-needed economic sanctions and protect these endangered creatures from senseless slaughter.

Your gift will help us mobilize a public outcry and launch a media campaign that calls on President Obama to make Iceland pay a price -- at long last -- for its years of illegal whaling.

Those sanctions must be targeted at companies with ties to Iceland’s whaling industry: the seafood, shipping and retail businesses that drive the demand and trade in whale meat.

History has proven that nothing less than economic sanctions will get Iceland’s attention.

In 2011, in response to pressure from activists like you, President Obama imposed diplomatic sanctions on Iceland for its hunting of fin whales.

But Iceland just thumbed its nose at those measures and has gone back to business as usual, killing magnificent and endangered whales.

Enough is enough. We must ratchet up the pressure right now. But we need your help.

Your support will enable us to generate public pressure on the White House ... expose the truth about Iceland’s illegal whaling in the media ... and make the strongest possible case for tough trade sanctions -- all aimed at forcing Iceland to call off its whale hunt for good.

With your help we will defend whales and our environment in the most effective way possible.

The next fin whale could be killed at any time. We’re counting on Members like you -- people who care deeply about protecting whales -- to join us in coming to their defense. Please let me know you will help. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Frances

A Light Fails in Egypt

A Light Fails in Egypt

Morsi-RallyHere at SFI, we warned more than a year ago that Egypt had big problems that required big solutions that the Muslim Brotherhood government wasn’t up to the task of delivering. Walter Russell Mead, writing at his blog on the website of The American Interest, spells out just how serious the situation is and what the immediate future looks like.
Inexperienced 18 years olds who have grown up in corrupt, poorly governed societies, and been educated in trashy schools by incompetent hacks know very well that the status quo is unacceptable. Young people who know they are being ripped off and abused are typically not very patient. Throw in healthy doses of sexual frustration and contempt for an establishment that has lost confidence in its own capacity to lead, and you have a cocktail much more explosive than anything Molotov knew.

Morsi Isn’t Going Anywhere Without a Fight

Morsi Isn’t Going Anywhere Without a Fight

Mohammed_MorsiWith four dead in ongoing protests against the Muslim Brotherhood government in Egypt, Ariel Ben Solomon of the Jerusalem Post writes that Westerners shouldn’t get too excited or upset just yet – odds are strong that Mohammed Morsi and his Islamist fellow travelers aren’t going anywhere.  At least not anytime soon.
But from reports, it seems that the Egyptian president remains defiant despite the crisis. The Muslim Brotherhood organization is described by analysts as being “pragmatic,” but the government’s behavior since coming to power seems to be more like a play for power at all costs, than any reasonableness.

Wage Peace

Wage Peace

Wage Peace is AFSC’s initiative to promote peace over war around the world, waging peace with the same determination and energy that nations wage war. We seek to eliminate U.S. militarism by cutting military spending, acknowledging the impact of war, and promoting conflict prevention as an alternative.

Advocacy and education

On a national level, Wage Peace works to change federal budget priorities, advocating for cuts to the military budget in order to meet human needs both here and abroad. Tools and resources include:
If I Had a Trillion Dollars: Youth aged 10-23 are invited to submit a film to this annual festival about how they would spend federal dollars to benefit their communities.
Invest in People, not the Pentagon action toolkit: A toolkit with everything you need to make sure that vital social programs are preserved and that deep cuts to Pentagon spending are made.
One Minute for Peace: Contribute to AFSC’s campaign to raise $2.2 million for peace—the same amount the U.S. military spends in just one minute.
Windows and Mirrors: Reflections on the War in Afghanistan: Communities can host this traveling mural exhibit, which memorializes Afghan civilian casualties.
Afghanistan 101: Wage Peace’s co-coordinators blog about resources, advocacy, and actions to end the war in Afghanistan.

Work in communities

In communities throughout the United States and abroad, AFSC peace-building programs work locally as part of Wage Peace to coordinate education and advocacy to change federal budget priorities, to highlight human and economic costs of war, to learn from the legacies of war, and to prevent war.
